Lebanon: Ensuring access to adequate housing – LBN901
Since 2011, Lebanon has been facing immense challenges to cope with internal and external demographic and socio-political changes. In 2019, as Lebanon was dealing with the Syrian refugee crisis, the consequences of the economic and financial downfall led to the devaluation of the national currency and hyperinflation as well as job losses and business closures all over the country.
In 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown worsened the overall social situation and led to more economic hardships especially with businesses closed, wages cut, daily workers unable to meet basic needs, and inflation increased.
The impact of the Beirut port blast on 4 August has further exacerbated the social and economic decline of Lebanon’s infrastructure. The blast destroyed 300 thousand houses and 10,000 businesses in the affected areas. Among survivors many do not have adequate shelter.
