Ethiopia: Lifesaving Emergency Nutrition and Protection Response for most vulnerable Afar conflict affected people – ETH948

The Afar Region of Ethiopia is facing a difficult humanitarian emergency due to the conflict in Northern Ethiopia. Renewed armed clashes across Zone 2 of Afar region have resulted in thousands of people displaced since mid-December 2021. An estimated 80,000 children under five years old and pregnant and lactating women (PLW) need malnutrition preventative and treatment interventions. However, only 22% of the 414 facilities available in the region are currently functional, including two hospitals and 31 health centres.

Moreover, women and children are particularly at risk for sexual exploitation and abuse and are exposed to negative coping mechanisms such as child labor, transactional sex, and harmful practices. Women and girls have been victims of rapes and sexual violence when the conflict broke, as they fled.

Objectives

1) Improved access to nutrition services aimed at preventing, identifying and treating severe and moderate acute malnutrition among under 5 children and pregnant and lactating women

2) Improved prevention and response to SGBV in crisis affected communities

Expected Results

ER1. Rehabilitation of 8,596 children under five and pregnant and lactating women (PLW) affected by moderate or severe acute malnutrition through establishing and/or strengthening therapeutic and supplementary feeding centers in the target project area.

ER2. Provision of SGBV post violence services in crisis affected communities.
